I finally got myself over to Balboa Island today and painted boats for the very first time. I loved the views there and can't wait to go back again tomorrow. I know I will be spending quite some time there creating an entire series of Balboa paintings, from the boats to the Fun Zone, which I am anxious to do night paintings of. The photo to your left is the first stage of the initial block in, with the finished painting below. It's refreshing to paint more intricate detail and man made objects placed within beautiful scenery.

Here's what I've been up to this month, June 2008, with my landscape painting en plein air. I've had a great month with meeting new clients and tackling some large commissions. I really enjoy painting on a larger scale, there's much more room for experimentation and learning. I'm looking forward to traveling up north next month to paint in the eastern Sierras and then back up in Oregon for a bit. I know the Freed Gallery on the Oregon coast is anxious for me to paint some new countryside scenes. I miss painting the horses and cows and being surrounded by endless shades of green.

This was one of the more challenging paintings I have ever done on location. I found this amazing tree near the Back Bay off Bayless & Jamboree. The light & shadows we changing at a rapid pace and the ants weren't too happy about my setup and declared war. Jonny -0 Red Ants - 1
I'm excited to go back again at different times of the day and work a bit smaller so my colors are more accurate.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my work, I hope you enjoy viewing my paintings as much as I enjoyed creating them.
These are ALL original oil paintings painted on location. I paint mostly coastal scenes throughout Southern California but I am starting to venture out to the California hills and inner cites, the country sides of Oregon(my home state) and soon the hot floors of Arizona and Hawaii. I DO NOT work from photos unless I am working on anything larger than 2x3 feet or am doing a private commission of a location I am unable to visit. I will NOT make prints as of now, nor do I plan to at this time, and no prints of my paintings exist...yet. These are completely original oil paintings capturing the look and feel of Orange County and other spots throughout the west coast.

I paint in all sizes, from 5x7 inches to 3x5 feet or larger. Prices range from $100-$1800 & up, depending on the size. I add 20% to all private commissions.

Painting in the Redwoods in February of 2008.

Here's a collection of new & old paintings done throughout Laguna Beach and around various parts of Oregon. These are all done in oil on location, I DO NOT work from photographs unless i'm working larger than 3x4 feet. As of now no prints of my work exist so everything you see here is an original and one of a kind.

Just about all of these painting were done this year, and over half are from just this month alone. Several of these are from the Montage resort in Laguna Beach, i have been painting there for the last 2 weeks straight from sun up to sun down. I am madly in love with the views there but i think it's time to venture elsewhere. There's a lot of other land to be painted! ~jel

My first time painting in Carmel. I only lasted about an hour or so. The wind gusts were over 40 miles an hour and freezing, but it couldn't stop me from painting this amazing tree.

My Abstrotica portraits

January Trip to Oregon

This last winter I spent 6 weeks in Oregon and central California, and in that time I got to paint in some spectacular areas along the west coast. The Redwoods, Carmel and the Dallas countryside of Oregon were my favorites. I'll post more photos soon, but here are my favorite paintings from that trip. Arizona is next on the list! I should be out there by mid-April to paint those desert floors.
